Professional Boundaries

A registered teacher has been determined to be someone with appropriate qualifications, who is competent, of good character, and fit to be a teacher. Registered teachers and Limited Authority to Teach holders are expected to satisfy a standard of behaviour that is generally expected of a teacher.

The Board has developed Professional Boundaries: Guidelines for Tasmanian Teachers to provide information about professional boundaries in teacher-student relationships. These guidelines are designed to raise awareness of issues and situations that may arise, prompt reflective behaviour, and provide some guidance. Teachers are encouraged to seek advice from a trusted supervisor or their principal if they are in any doubt about the appropriateness of their proposed conduct or another teacher’s conduct.

The Professional Boundaries: Guidelines for Tasmanian Teachers were adapted from the Managing Professional Boundaries: Guidelines for Teachers created by the Australasian Teacher Regulatory Authorities (ATRA). The Board acknowledges the work of ATRA, the Queensland College of Teachers, and the Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia for their assistance in the development of this guide and their generosity in providing their documentation.
