Application for Registration as a Teacher in Tasmania under Mutual Recognition

‚ÄčPlease note: Applications for registration (to commence in Tasmania in 2018) under Mutual Recognition provisions cannot be accepted until December 2017.

Registration to Work with Vulnerable People with the Department of Justice, Tasmania will be a criteria for registration from 2017 onwards. We recommend if you are considering gaining Tasmanian teacher registration that you get the process with the Department of Justice underway as soon as possible. Read more about this process here.

Applying for Tasmanian registration with current registration in another state or territory of Australia or New Zealand

Applicants who have teacher registration in another Australian state or territory or in New Zealand may apply for registration in Tasmania under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 or the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997.

The Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania recognises teacher registration from the following jurisdictions:

  • Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (formerly the New Zealand Teachers Council)

  • Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory

  • Teachers Registration Board of South Australia

  • Queensland College of Teachers

  • Victorian Institute of Teaching

  • Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia (formerly Western Australian College of Teaching)

  • Australian Capital Territory Teacher Quality Institute

If you hold current registration in one or more of these other jurisdictions, you should answer this question YES in your online application and provide details of your registration.

What about NSW?

Mutual recognition is an application process that applies to individuals with current teacher registration in another state/ jurisdiction. As NSW does not have a teacher registration body (it has an accreditation body BOSTES (formerly NSWIT) which operates quite differently) we are unable to offer NSW teachers the mutual recognition application pathway. Instead NSW teachers need to apply for Tasmanian teacher registration using our general online application process.

If you have achieved BOSTES Accreditation of Professional Competence (Proficient Teacher Accreditation), please include a certified copy of the certificate with your other documentary evidence.

About applying under Mutual Recognition provisions

If you hold current registration in one of the listed jurisdictions you will be deemed to be registered in Tasmania from the date on which your completed application and payment are received by the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania. You will be deemed to hold the same registration status and conditions (if applicable) as you hold in the other jurisdiction/s.

The Board then has one month to decide whether to confirm (with or without conditions) or refuse your registration. During this time the Board will take steps to verify the accuracy of the registration information you have provided. You will be notified in writing when a decision is made to confirm (with or without conditions) or refuse your registration. If your application is refused, your annual registration fee will be refunded.
